Life in the Canopy
Gomarda hosts a striking diversity of birdlife — over 100 species recorded — across its forests, grasslands and water bodies. The Peafowl, India's national bird, is a common and colourful sight strutting through clearings, especially during the breeding season.
Raptors such as eagles patrol the skies above the hills, while owls roost quietly in tree hollows, more often heard than seen. Parakeets and kingfishers add flashes of green and blue near forest edges and water, and the striking Asian paradise flycatcher is a prized seasonal sighting in the shaded woodland.
The sanctuary's reservoirs attract water birds through the cooler months, complementing a strong resident population of woodland species found along the shaded forest trails.
For birdwatchers, the best moments may not always be dramatic — sometimes it is a call from deep inside the forest, a flash of colour between branches, or simply sitting quietly and letting the forest come alive around you. Bring binoculars. Slow down. Listen.
